A person whom begins drinking alcohol before the age of 15 is four times more likely to become dependant on alcohol than those who wait for the legal age. (NIAAA, January 2006) A child is more likely to experiment with alcohol when living in a home with a parent who is an active alcoholic. A teen that experiences this type of home environment is more likely to carry that type of behavior in their personal lives. More than half of the nation’s teenagers will experiment with alcohol before they leave high school. Teens are influenced mainly by their emotions and impulses when it comes to making a decision about drinking. Teens are also more likely to give in to peer pressure; they will sometimes do anything to feel accepted. What exactly is it that makes a person an alcoholic?
In many places all over the world alcohol consumption is a part of every day life. However, in certain people it can become a chronic disease. This is a very destructive disease that sometimes we have no control over. The reasons are not certain as to why this addiction happens to some people and not others. The symptoms for alcoholism are universal, no matter where you live or what nationality you are. Whether you live in the United States of America or Europe, alcoholism is still the same. An individual may not recognize that he or she is suffering from alcoholism, even though everyone around them can see this happening. The individual is in the alcohol fog, and can not see what is happening around them.
