waist dresses. Dresses varied in all lengths and widths. Also reflecting the

subdued mood of the thirties were colors: black, navy and gray were liked for

the city wear and browns and greens were liked for autumn outfits. For

afternoon and evening wear, black or pastel shades of peach, pink, green, and

blue were the most fashionable( Costantino 8).

Style of young women included fashionable box pleat skirts and fitted

caplet with hard- embroidered ducks. The skirt was as high as the thigh. Young

men dressed in miniature men's suits and ties as soon as they were old enough

(Costantino 23).

In the early thirties the masculine suit, a one button single breasted coat

actually fell loosely over the chest. The baggy trousers has pleats at the waist,

altogether a dramatic change and good looking. By 1938 the style changed to

the English paddock suit with a high front, two buttoned closing(Wilcox 164).

Costume jewelry departments in stores could be extensive. Rhinestones

and diamante' earrings and clip sets were admired. Most fashionable were

heart- shaped or stud earrings, while the dress clips were often larger versions
