It does not matter whether this story is true or not, but the point is that it could be. The technological advancements in the last ten years have been and continue to be exponential. These advancements are wonderful things, but the greater use or reliability upon technology, the greater risk for exploitation for cheating purposes.
The technological devices most beneficial to those trying to cheat would have the three core capabilities of capturing, storing, and displaying data. Additionally, these abilities may be split between multiple devices. Capturing data may be taking pictures, video/audio recordings, receiving a message, accessing the internet, or being able to manually input the data. Displaying the data most commonly would be on a screen, but could also be an audio playback, or simply a print out. The key advancement in technology which has increased the ability for cheating is in storage. The storage devices of concern are in the form of non-volatile memory. “Non-volatile memory is computer memory that can retain the stored information even when not powered (Wikipedia, 2007, para. 1).” These devices are known as disks, flash drives, and thumb drives. The technological advancements and adaptabilities have made these devices increasingly smaller but an exponential capability for storage. The latest advancement in storage capacity was recently announced in WIRED magazine. The developer Michael Kozicki claims "A thumb drive using our memory could store a terabyte of information” (Madrigal, 2007, para. 4).
