MYANMAR: THE FACTS

Burma [1], officially the Union of Myanmar is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia and lies in the monsoon region.
Burma was under British occupation since 1824, and was incorporated into the British Raj in 1886. It was administered as a province of British India until 1937, when it became a separate self governing colony.

Military rule (1962-present)
Burma’s troubled past was followed by a doubtful future. [2]Democratic rule ended in 1962, when General Ne Win led a military coup d’ etat. It continues to struggle ever since, as its political system remains under the tight control of S.P.D.C., the military led government that rules Burma since 1992.
[3]Almost from the beginning there were sporadic protests against the military rule, many of which were organized by students, and were almost always violently suppressed by the government.
[4], [5], [6] Protest marches organized by monks and nuns didn’t have a better fate. Many monasteries are being patrolled by government troops.
