Street Racing
...theirs can go and hoping it's faster than the next person's, thus emerging in illegal street races. Street racing is a form of unofficial and illegal auto racing which takes place on public roads. Street racing can either be spontaneous or well-planned and coordinated. Spontaneous races usually occur at intersections where two cars stop at a red light before they begin racing. Well coordinated races, in comparison, are planned in advance and often have people communicating via radio and using police scanners and GPS units to mark locations of local police hot spots. Illegal street racing seems to be a national problem. Racers gather late at night and solicit crowds to watch and place bets (Copper). Nationwide statistics show that 49 people are injured for every 1,000 who participate in Illegal Street racing (Illegal). Law enforcement officials have decided to use traffic cameras and helicopters to monitor popular street racing locations around the nation, in order to prevent accidents caused by these races, thus ending up in saving lives.
One of the most common types of street racing is drag racing. Drag racing is a contest generally involving two (or more) vehicles accelerating from a stop until either a given distance or speed is reached, or only one party remains in the race (Drag). This differs from most sanctioned drag racing, in which events generally begin from a stop and race until a predetermined distance is reached. The race is determined both by the performance of the car and the driving ability, especially shifting, of the drivers. The shifting is also determined by the upgrades on the car so that the driver can shift more quickly and smoothly, making driving expertise equally as important as auto performance.
