Companies in transition require answers to many questions that arise during this phase. InterClean, Inc. is moving quickly to be the first in its market to develop full-service solution packages to their cleaning customers. In order to accomplish this InterClean must begin the change process within its organization. Instead of a trial and error process which can be costly, time consuming and lead to questionable results the process of benchmarking has been used to answer many of the questions that InterClean will need to answer to become the global leader that it desires.
Aligning Organizational Structure with Strategy
InterClean through its new organizational strategy is facing many challenges. The integration of EnviroTech within its organization and the change in the marketing perspective of the company will require making changes within the internal structure of the new organization.
Its goal to become a global leader is similar to that of Dell Computer Corporation. Dell’s organization was described as a “fairly mercenary, sink or swim culture” (Lowther, 2006, p.16) when the company decided that this type of culture would not serve them well in the global market. Dell knew that their organizational capability, “the firms ability to manage people to gain competitive advantage” (Dreher & Dougherty, 2001, p. 4) was not at a level to sustain global advantage. This example can serve InterClean well, as it needs to focus attention on the needs of the employees to assure a successful company.
Dell’s strategy was to create an atmosphere of inclusion where the employees were considered part of the team, no matter where they worked.
