Relationships may seem simple at first; the perfect picture has been planted within each person’s head of how a married couple should be. The appearance of a married couple may seem to be perfect – a loving husband and wife who live the perfect life without any problems, but little do we know, it may change. Their everlasting love may not be so everlasting after all. When a partner starts having doubts about the relationship or is not satisfied of what they already have, they look for someone else; someone new to satisfy their missing needs. Thus a love affair begins, leaving the other spouse clueless while on the other hand loving another person. The protagonist in each of the novels Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert and Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald starts by introducing perfect relationships, but as we move through the story, one relationship turns into two, and disaster begins to occur. As well, this is shown through a series of Love Letters arranged by Antonia Fraser, connecting all three of these pieces together. Despite the ideal image society has put on married couples, break-ups and love affairs often occur. Relationships may start off strong but the slightest mistake could change the whole situation. A new love is formed and a new relationship begins, which usually leads to self destruction. Emma Bovary in Madame Bovary, Dick Diver in Tender is the Night and the couples in Love Letters are all similar in ways where the love affairs takes control over their life but on the contrary, each protagonist takes it a different way, causing their own downfall.
