...or computer application that giving advice or solving problems that would otherwise require extensive human expertise and then imitates human reasoning and decision-making processes for those who have less expertise. Expert systems represent the expertise knowledge as data or rules within the computer. These rules and data can be called upon when needed to solve problems. The unique value of expert systems is that years of experience special skills are not completely lost when a human expert dies, retires, or leaves for another job.

Expert systems thus provide a way to store human knowledge, expertise, and experience in computers. Expert systems are often called knowledge-base systems, and sometimes knowledge systems. Books and manual guides have a tremendous amount of knowledge but a human has to read and interpret the knowledge for it to be used. The ‘father of expert systems’ Edward Albert Feigenbaum (born January 20, 1936; Weehawken U.S) have say that an intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that was difficult enough to acquire significant human expertise for their solutions.

Expert systems typically have a number of several components. The knowledge base is the combined subject knowledge and experiences of the human experts. Normally the way of representing knowledge is using rules. The inference rules is a set of logical judgments applied to the knowledge base each time a user describes a situation to the expert system.

Characteristics Of Expert Systems

i. In general three different methods of reasoning can be distinguished: rule-, case- and constraint-based reasoning

ii. Simulates human reasoning about a problem domain

iii. Performs reasoning over representations of human knowledge

iv. Solves problems by heuristic or approximate methods

v. Diagnoses problems and may...
