Sherlock Holmes
...is narrating the story. The narrator (Watson) mostly starts his stories in the middle of an action or scene "I am afraid, Watson that I shall I have to go," said Holmes.
The style in he narrates the scene is informal but in a civil and polite way. He uses great description when setting the scene so that the reader can imagine exactly how the scene looks like, "I found myself in the corner of a first-class carriage flying along en route for Exeter, while Sherlock, with his sharp, eager face framed in his ear-flapped travelling-cap dipped rapidly into the bundle of fresh papers which he Paddington.".
the narrator tells the story in a chronological order, in the present tense, so that it is easy to follow and make the reader keen on what going to happen next.
He is also a close friend and partner of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes trust and also relies on Watson," I was sure that I might rely on you." , " you must say before this gentleman anything which you might say to me."
Watson doesn't provide Sherlock Holmes with clues on ideas, he himself is in the same position as the readers who are hanging on the edge.
We also see Sherlock Holmes intimate details and thoughts through Watson, " His manner was not effusive, it was seldom but he was glad, I think to see me. With hardly a word spoken, but with a kindly eye.",
We only hear about the mystery/ solutions through Watson, so he himself is left in the dark in the story and is uncovering Sherlock Holmes's paths of discovering the mystery through the story, this creates empathy between Watson and the readers, adds excitement to the story by not knowing what will happen next,...
