The history of the Internet is short; it has revolutionized the computer and communications world like nothing before. The invention of the telegraph, telephone, radio, and computer set the stage for this extraordinary new wave of technology. The Internet is a world-wide broadcasting system, a mechanism for gathering information, and a medium for communication and interaction between individuals and their computers without regard for geographic location. The Internet represents one of the most successful examples of the benefits of long-term investments and commitment to research and development of information technology.
The Internet, sometimes simply called "the Net," is a worldwide system of computer networks – (a network of networks) in which users at any one computer can, if they have permission, get information from any other computer (and sometimes talk directly to users at other computers). The Internet is not a single network. It is easily accessible by individual computer hosts in a variety of ways.
The first test of the Internet was launched in 1971 with a public showing in early 1972. This first network, known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network) was a milestone in computer communications. The Department of Defense in 1969 commissioned ARPANET and the first node was created at the University of California in Los Angeles, running on a Honeywell DDP-516 mini-computer.
