Raisin In The Sun
...Understanding slavery and that way of life baffles me and confuses me. However, the play Raisin in the Sun is a about the Younger family who reside in on the South Side of Chicago in 1950s. In the opening scene the family believe they are about to be given an insurance check for $10,000. Every member of that family has a view or idea with what they would desire to do with that money. Mama, would love to fulfill her dream and buy a house, other members in the family have different views with what they would like to do, ranging from opening a liquor store to solving financial problems.
The story tells what they do with the money and the hardships the family goes through, as we follow them through only a few weeks of time. In the end after everything theygo through from pregnancies and marriage proposals the family moves away and fulfills there dream of moving out.
Mama: (pg. 822) “Well- Well- son, I’m waiting to hear you say something... I’m waiting to hear how you be your father’s son. Be the man he was... Your wife says she going to destroy your child. And I’m waiting to hear you talk like him and say we people who give children life, not who destroy them- I’m waiting to see you stand up and look like your daddy and say we done give up one baby to poverty and that we ain’t going to give up nary another one... I’m waiting.”
Asagai: (pg. 838) “Then isn’t there something wrong in a house- in a world- where all dreams, good or bad, must depend on the death of a man? I never thought to see you like this, Alaiyp. You! Your brother made a mistake and you are grateful to him so that now you can give up the ailing human race on account of it! You talk about what good is struggle, what good is anything! Where are we all going and why are we bothering!”
