Race And My Community
...Falls, Oregon to a full Hispanic mother and a half German father. Growing up in my family I never really saw much prejudice or racism due to my family itself being very diverse. I have always had people from many different cultures around me from day one. When I was about five years old my family and I moved to Medford, Oregon where I have been for the last eighteen years. Medford is quite a bit larger than Klamath Falls is and has a much larger population. As the years have gone by Medford has grown as well as its diversity, however, there are still many barriers and problems with grouping and stereotyping.
I am a half Hispanic, half Caucasian woman who lives in a community that is continuing every day do move toward greater diversity. I live in a little block of apartments that have about thirteen buildings with four apartments each. In the complex there is a very diverse population. There are several Caucasians, Hispanics, African Americans, and Hispanics all in one small area. In the area that I live in there are several people who look like me as many people who are missed culture or race. The people in my community who look like me can be of several different races or cultures. I somewhat resemble many different races such as Hispanics, Italians, and even Native Americans. I have been told fairly often that I have very similar traits in common with each of these races.
From what I have seen and been witness to there has been stereotyping in regards to Hispanics mainly due to gang involvement that has come up from California. I would not say that they are treated any differently that other people by leaders in the community, they are just at times stereotyped because of what has been seen among this race within the community so often.
