...African Americans and Asian Americans are not as big as White Americans, but they also play an important role in developing the United States as a melting pot of races. Nearly everyday our borders are flooded with people trying to enter the United States in hopes of living the American dream. The American dream is different for everyone, but the vast majority of people see it as having a family, working a job, and even owning a home. The dream differs for everyone, but the goal of living a happy life full of opportunity remains the constant.
Currently the United States is at war over in Iraq, people of all races have joined together to fight as United States citizens. According to Dean Yates, “The human cost is staggering -- anywhere between 90,000 and one million Iraqi civilians killed, according to various estimates; nearly 4,000 U.S. soldiers dead; while four million Iraqis are displaced.” The color or race of these soldiers is never mentioned; all that is mentioned is that they were United States citizens. I feel nobody should ever be mentioned with their color, we are all just United States citizens.
I was born in the state of Michigan nearly three decades ago. Michigan is home to many different races of people. The automotive industry has been an employer to people of all races. The state seems to home most White Americans in the northern areas and African Americans seem to enjoy the city life. According to Rinku Sen of the AsianWeek newspaper, “The term "people of color" has deep historical roots. Many confuse it for the clearly negative "colored”.” The Metro Detroit suburbs are home to people of both races. For the most part, the state is home to hard, blue-collar workers just trying to earn a living. No matter on the race of the person, we all seem to be struggling financially these days.
