I am an African American who lives in a community that is dominated by Hispanics. I have lived in the Coachella Valley for a while. I believe racial issues are an important part of any city in America today. America is a racially diverse country but still seems to have many problems such as racial equality, race relations and encouraging diversity.
Firstly to understand how race is socially and spatially constructed we must first understand what race means. Before I started this class I thought race and ethnicity was the same thing, then as I was reading in Chapter 1, I realized it was totally different. I have learned that race is described as a group that is socially set apart because of obvious physical differences. Ethnicity is described as a group set apart from others because of its national origin or distinctive cultural patterns.
As I look around my community all races are together. For instance, at my church the majority of the congregation is African Americans. We do have Hispanics, White, and mixed races who also attend. I see everyone as being the same; the only difference is the color of our skin. The Pastor treats everyone equally. Though some have more jobs than others it is not because of their race it is because some have more knowledge than others. The congregation treats and respects everyone. There was a time I went to church where the whole congregation were African Americans. Now things are changing and other races feel they can come and worship with African Americans. I see this as Heaven, because in Heaven there will be no races we will be all one people; God’s people.
Now on my job the majority of the staff is White. There is 1 African American, 1 Asian, and 4 Hispanics. I see everyone as being the same there to; again the only difference is the color
