...maintain justice. Justice is a cornerstone of humanity and civilization. We often think that those wronged in our society should be treated fairly, but sometimes those who are the most mistreated cannot speak for themselves. Animal cruelty is one of the most heinous acts that can be committed. Such acts may include torture, starvation, mutilation, or treatment that leads to the eventual death or the outright killing of an animal. Perhaps more pervasive because it is less obvious is the animal abuse that goes on at puppy mills where breeds of dogs are raised and the breeder always has puppies for sale. If the same crimes were committed against humans, the offenders would be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Instead these abusers get away with fines or with very little jail time. How are we ever going to maintain a humane society when there are people who literally are getting away with murder? Animals in society need to be protected from abuse in general and from the neglect of puppy mills.
Many Americans establish important relationships with their pets, becoming as close to them as to other family members. Today, there is day care for dogs while their owners are working, specialty clothing lines for pets, and cookbooks created especially for pet owners who want to please their four-legged family member. I have had the chance to become very close to my Scottish terrier, Ivan. Ivan is as much a part of the Gleichman household as any other member. Of course, he is fed, watered, and walked as a matter of routine. But he also gets presents, is played with often, and is taken on many family outings. He also is considered during any family decision, especially if we will be away from the house for a long time and he will be left alone or when we have workmen coming to make home repairs that may disturb him.
