Defining Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence refers to the ability to recognize and regulate emotions in ourselves and others. It is the ability to pinpoint, understand and manage emotions. Emotional Intelligence also refers to a person’s ability to detect and manage emotional cues and information. The above definition is according to Daniel Goleman, a psychologist and science writer, published a number 1 bestseller book titled “Emotional Intelligence” in 1995. His book was considered as the introduction of the emotional intelligence concept. However, the concept of Emotional Intelligence had its roots in earlier researches in psychology.
Beginning in the early 1900’s, intelligence became an area of great interest and was heavily researched. Scientists such as Thorndike (1920) (social intelligence) and Gardner (1983) (personal intelligence) established the idea of interpersonal intelligence from which emotional intelligence developed.
