...through a conscious use of stylistic devices. Poems are an excellent method to interpret and comprehend human nature and social behaviour in its many forms. They allow our students to possess a perception and expression of that which is beautiful or lyrical in literature and life itself. Through the study of poetry in its many forms, students are able to examine three things. Firstly, the themes expressed by the poet to provide an insight into human experiences, secondly the moods generated by poetry to accurately portray and tap into human feelings and lastly the inspirational use of words and phrases to create imagery. Ladies and Gentlemen of the Parents and Friends Association, school is not just about text books and trigonometry. School is a process by which we equip our students with the essential tools they will need throughout their lives. Rather than asking yourselves, “Does my son really need to know this?” the question you should be asking yourselves is, “Will my son be equipped for life in all its aspects?”

Poems are an excellent way of portraying some of the many natures and behaviours of individuals as well as teaching our students about influential themes. Although fictional, poems provide our students with an insight into many human relationships and interactions described within the underlying theme of a poem. A theme such as the terrors of war, is just an example of a theme that young men must be conscious of during life. Such a theme is clearly portrayed in Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce et decorum est”.
