When Patrick arrives home Mary and him both greet each other with “ Hullo darling” by both of them saying this Dahl creates the image of a very repetitive relationship he also puts them in separate individual paragraphs to emphasise how orderly they are. In the next paragraph the quote “She took his coat and hung it in the closet. Then she walked over and made the drinks,…”- the repetition of “she” in this context is emphatic to show how much she cared for him. Later the next paragraph’s there is a very effective quote that emphasises how much Mary does for Patrick “She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man, and to feel -almost as a sunbather feels the sun-that warm male glow that came out of him to her when they were alone together. She loved him for the way he sat loosely in a chair, for the way he came in the door, or moved slowly across the room with long strides. She loved the intent…”
The repetition of “she” now emphasises how much she loved just being in the same room as him and the sentence structure such as comma’s creates a list that also emphasises what she loves about him and how much things there are that she adores about him. Later in the story when Patrick is trying to break the news that he is leaving Mary Dahl uses short paragraphs to emphasise how concerned Mary is about what he is going to tell her such as “ What is it, darling ? What’s the matter ?” the use of Mary asking two questions emphasises how concerned and frightened she is at that moment. When Patrick is finished explaining to Mary she is in denial and begins to go and fix supper when she is the freezer looking for a meal she finds a leg of lamb. Dahl...
