1. What Is Competitiveness?
The concept of competitiveness is gaining importance and has become apart of discussion in worldwide forums in this era of globalization. Improvement in competitiveness of economies has become a dire need of the day. This raises a question what is competitiveness? The world economic forum defines competitiveness in their report," competitiveness as the set of institutions, policies, and factors that determine the level of productivity of a country”. And the level of productivity is the level of prosperity that can be earned by economy. (Global Competitveness Report, 2008-09) This means economies with more productivity earn more and vice versa.
2. What Is The Competitiveness Of Pakistan?
It is true that competitive advantage comes from the resources available to one nation or economy i.e. human, financial, and natural resources etc. "The real wealth consisted of the goods and services available to a country's citizens (Smith, 1776). In his theory of Absolute Advantage he said, "Different countries produce some goods more efficiently than others." (Smith, 1776). This is how countries develop or identify their competitive advantage over other economies of the world. Pakistan is abundant in natural resources, ideal climate for the cultivation of cotton, rice and wheat, skilled labor.
