...come true’, or rather ‘man needs his dreams to sustain him through life’.
Many people believe we have dreams for different reasons. The book ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck shows how dreams can sustain people through life, or can break them down when it doesn’t come true. Having a dream can help a person through a lot of hard times and make them appear easier or it can bring hard times upon a person. Without his best friend Lennie, George has no dream. The dream they share is among them. No one could really take Lennie’s place in George’s life. When Candy’s dreams are shattered due to him loosing his hand his world upside down and all his priorities change. All Candy wants now is to not get fired. Candy then asks to join Lennie and George on their farm. When George accepts his proposal Candy is delighted. And the dreams start to get to their head. Curley’s wife also had dreams of her own. To join show business and wear fancy clothes, and not have a worry in the world. But when she doesn’t get a letter back her dreams are killed and she’s forced to marry Curley. Because of these dreams Lennie, George, Candy and Curley’s wife are more focussed on the time it will come rather then the bigger picture. Not focusing on the bigger picture they don’t see the bad things that might stop them from fulfilling their dreams. The causes their dreams to both help them keep going but slowly crushes their spirit as well until they come crashing to reality.
Many people believe we have dreams for a reason. Although these reasons differ they all agree that they have a purpose. In ‘Of Mice and Men’ by John Steinbeck the two main characters have survived on their dreams for as long as they have travelled the roads but because of Lennie getting them into trouble most of the time they didn’t ever get to finish their jobs, take the money and leave.
