...our lives and cutting lives shorter then generations past. Approximately 25 percent of children and teenagers are obese and the number is on the rise. Since the1960's childhood obesity has increased by 54 percent in children ages six to eleven. In children twelve to seventeen it has increased by 39 percent. (Cutler, 93) Childhood obesity is so prevalent among these age groups that it has reached epidemic proportions. It’s time to work on a plan to combat these rates and bring our body mass index down. First, by identifying the causes of obesity and then by working on a solution.
Causes of increase in overweight Americans
Just about everywhere you look, doctors are blaming America's obesity epidemic on two things: too much food — especially widely marketed fast food and junk food — and too little exercise, with too much time in front of the TV or playing video games. With Working Parents spend longer times outside their homes and spend less time at home with their children. The children stay inside the home having less time to do any physical activity while playing outside the home. Children, who play indoors, play endless hours of video games and watches continuous television. Indoor activities do not help them to utilize extra energy, as would an outdoor activity leaving more energy retained in the body to be stored as fat.
Cutter explains, the fast life styles of today parents do not give them time to provide balanced food to their children. Most parents get fast and processed food for their family due to their busy lifestyles and non-availability of time. If the parents do exercise regularly then their children also follow them. Today healthy living is very necessary. Parents can play an important role for our children healthy future.
