Choosing Nutrition as a Topic of Interest
I chose to discuss nutrition and its many aspects for my research project. On several occasions, I have witnessed this topic playing a negative role in the classroom. During my observations and substitute teaching I have seen the food that is being served in school cafeterias. I have also seen the food that those students who do not eat school lunch are bringing. Sadly, there have also been a few times in the classroom where I have observed a teacher having to give a student food because she was so hungry that she was crying.
In my opinion learning cannot take place if a student has not received some type of nourishment. The student that was crying because she was so hungry cannot possibly focus on the math problem on her desk. Her attention has shifted to the hunger pains in her stomach. Children need nutritious food to continue to grow at healthy rates. Nutritious food also aides in brain function. If a child has only eaten macaroni and cheese for the last two weeks because that is all there was available, they might have a harder time focusing and retaining information.
