Netherlands is part of the mainland Western Europe, densely populated and recognized globally for its windmills and Clogs. Netherlands has a strong international role as evidenced by being the founding member of the European Union (EU) and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
The Dutch united province gained their independence from Spain in 1579. Afterwards, during the 17th century, the Dutch province became a major commercial power with colonies around the world. After a struggle with the French invaders, Kingdom of Netherlands was born in 1830 which is composed of the east colonies and the West main Netherlands. In the 19th century, the Kingdom of Netherlands was slow to industrialize compared to neighbouring countries because of the complexity of the infrastructure requirement in modernising and the Dutch predominant reliance on wind power.
Netherlands is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. Presently, population density is 394.5 persons per square kilometer (EuroMonitor 2008). The pace is decelerating owing to the slowdown in population growth but by 2020 the density will still have risen to 402.7 (EuroMonitor 2008).
