After the cassette tapes, came the compact discs, or CDs as they are commonly called. CDs have been popular since the date of its creation, which was 1982 up to now, where it is still the standard for music audio recordings. But now we have moved into a new age of digital media, music downloads. The biggest argument of this is “is it right or wrong?” For the people out there who have their computer’s hard drive filled to the max with just music, will say there is not anything wrong with it. But sometimes people do not think of the people who make the music. Not just the artist, but the engineers, mixers, producers, etc. The people behind the music go unspoken for, which is one of the biggest problems with piracy period. Illegal music downloads may have hurt the music industry, but it has also helped establish new artists, boost tour revenue, and it has become the new norm in terms of hearing new music.
Musicians do not make as much money from their records as everyone think they do. They make most of their money from their tours, promotional appearances; some even have outside ventures such as clothing lines, acting, etc. For instance, Sean “Diddy” Combs has a record label, Bad Boy Records, he is the founder of Sean John Clothing, he has his own movie production company and he owns two restaurants. Another artist who does more than just make music is Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. Aside from just being a rap artist, he is also one of the founders and owners of Roc-A-Fella Records. He has also had tenure of being the President and CEO of Def Jam Records. Just like Sean Combs, Shawn Carter also has his clothing line called Rocawear.
