with an opening sequence of a public relations commercial for Munich. This
commercial is showing people in a gorgeous land setting and a girl on a
swing. We hear German, with no narraration,no music and has an unusual
effect due to the basis of the film. This is used as an opening sequence
because it was trying to show unity of people. The 1972 Olympics were being
held in Munich Germany, a land of past tradgeys and wanted to reunite as a
friendly nation. The visual hook of this film is of Ankie Spitzer and her
husband Andre Spitzer. It is a home video that was taken of them on their
wedding day, playing together, happily just married, and full of excitement.
The core assertion of this film is an avoidable tragedy of Palestinian
terrorists and the tragically inept country of Germany. The core assertion
links to the opening sequence because it was that Germany was welcoming
foreign people on their land to show that they are a new, respectable and
peaceful country. However, just the opposite is what happend during the
1972 Olympics. It was that instead of Unity, a great seperation of two
Countrys, with great differences battling chaoticly on German land. The
opening sequence worked very well because of the deep contrast of public
relations and terrorism.
This Character-Driven film uses many archival materials. The use of home
movies was used to show Andre and Ankie together and happily married. It
makes us feel happy to see two people in love and we see that they are
completely happy together. MacDonald does this becasue he wants to show us
the strong bond they have together. This particluar home video is the
