...yet none mentally challenged that are not taught with a teacher and curriculum to meet their developmental needs. Because of my personal experience with the elementary education system, having a child with cerebral palsy, I am convinced that the reduction of mainstreaming classes would be harmful to any child trying to complete any elementary grade.
While attending various parent teacher meetings and group meetings compiled of school officials and parent teacher associations board members there have been announcements of budget cuts and reduction of staff for certain groups. One of the main concerns was to reduce the staff and assistance for the classes that were created for the children with disabilities. There were classes that handled the specialized groups for a more focused attention on children that were deficient in main subjects. The main subjects were English, Math and Science and Social Studies. There were also classes that allowed these children with physical challenges to interact with other students of the same age and class for social development. This opportunity allowed none mentally retarded children that had some type of physical disability to have lunch and share library time and mingle during classes that were considered social classes. These classes were home economics, cooking and music and art classes. The time allowed created functions that were very meaningful to the children as they were developing for middle school. The classes were identified as mainstreaming and filtered children with a regular atmosphere and interaction for social development.
