...soul-mate or love for close friends who hold a special place in one’s heart. However, life occasionally likes to play devastating little games to test how strong the people on Earth really are. The game is called death and the rules are simple: the life of an individual is stolen and the hearts that victim had once impacted is replaced with a solid, black hole. The objective of the game is for the player to cope with the loss of their loved one and in the end, try to restore their broken heart. Many individuals who will encounter a loved one’s death will feel the only right thing they can do is grieve and mourn for years, feeling guilty or incapable of continuing life without their friend. One may feel that death is the greatest loss that one can experience but really “the greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live” (Norman Cousins). When one losses something they love, they are forced to thereafter be strong, bold and while overcoming this loss, learn one of the most gorgeous lessons in life.
Overcoming losses is definitely not an easy chapter in one’s life but no matter how hard one tries to prevent such tragedies from occurring, that is just not realistic. Once a heart is shattered into many little pieces, it may seem impossible to fix at first but with time, determination and will-power, the heart can be restored and when it is, the heart will be bigger and stronger than ever before. In Alice Sebold’s novel The Lovely Bones, the characters brilliantly show how they stumble and fall when trying to overcome the death of Susie Salmon but in the end, they find that they are most complete and satisfied accepting the loss of a loved daughter, sister and friend. To overcome a loss consists of four major stages –denial, anger, depression and acceptance –and it is this journey that makes the tragedies in life a gorgeous story.
