Effective managers use various political tactics to increase their power within the organization to coordinate and support the work of their peers and subordinates to meet company objectives (University of Phoenix, 2008).
All organizations experience conflict at one time or another, and especially when there are many types of personalities working together are teamed in an organization, the potential for conflict escalates. Power is the capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005). Managers can use this power and also politics to empower their employees in times of conflict, and to make the organization more effective, and as a result, more productive. Organizational politics are behaviors that others perceive as self-serving tactics for personal gain at the expense of other people and possibly the organization (McShane & Von Glinow, 2005).
Good Sport is a fitness equipment manufacturing company based in Coral Springs, Florida. They manufacture equipment such as bikes, treadmills and rowers. Ex-basketball star, Jason Poole, founded the company fifteen years ago and is now the Chairman of the Board. Marvin Wallace, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) has moved the company forward in the last four years, and enhanced production, raised profits, and improved research and development performance.
