There has been much discussion about whether the internet is a unique form of interaction that requires its own unique set of ethical guidelines, or whether the internet is able to fall within the same ethical guidelines that govern social interaction in the physical world. In this case study we will begin by discussing the points in which the internet is unique as compared to physical interaction. Next, we will discuss areas in which the internet is similar in comparison. We will then discuss the ethical framework that places constraints on the individual and explain how the internet lines up within this framework. Finally, we will discuss whether it is necessary to treat the internet as a unique forum of social interaction with its own unique ethical guidelines or if the current ethical framework and guidelines are sufficient to also govern social interaction within the confines of the internet.
As the internet has developed into a global social network, it has become necessary to discover how this interaction is different from normal physical interaction in the physical world. Due to the complexity and vast reach of the internet, people on opposite sides of the world can interact with one another as if they were within the same room. This makes it possible for people of differing cultures, religious backgrounds, social classes, and nationalities to interact in the same forum with one another.
