...Stephen N. Ferrell Research Writing 220 February 4, 2009 Keeping the Fight in Iraq 2 Iraq has been a country in the rule of a dictator since the beginning of its creation. Iraq began as a dependant British territory that was created out of three imperial at the end of the Ottoman Empire. The point of this is that the Iraqi people are used to this way of life. The groups that have been in power are not just going to roll over and let democracy take place. They feel they have a right to the reins of power in Iraq. This will not be an overnight or even five year solution. The United States cannot afford to leave right now or in the very near future. The Iraqi people have known fighting and war since as far back as history has been recorded. It stands to reason that a culture that has been raised and “fed” on war will likely result to violence as the primary function of society. This can also lead to a sense of selfishness in the society. This can make it difficult to implement a society with a brand new law set based on the democracy framework. Because the idea of a democracy is new to the Iraqi people, running a democracy will be even newer to them. They do not know what it takes to run a government based on many different decision making arms working together. In a dictatorship one person is in power and decides expressly how to rule the country. Whatever the dictator feels should be the law is the Keeping the Fight in Iraq 3 law. If one group makes a decision on an issue or votes against what one group wants, will there be threats and violent retaliation? This is a war torn country. It has been for many years. Violence is a part of their lives. How can one expect a civilization to change every aspect of their lives in five short years? There are a lot of different groups who do not even want a leader.
