Making it Happen: Sustaining a Commitment for Reading Success is a journal article about promoting different ways for teachers to be successful in teaching literacy to their students all year long. The first step in teaching literacy involves the process of teacher’s analyzing formal and informal assessments data. Once teachers have the data and have assessed it, they can set a plan and goals on how to teach what needs to be taught. This assessment is a great way for the teacher to learn what background knowledge each students is bringing into the classroom.
Step two for being successful in teaching literacy is setting high expectations for your students to ensure all students will be successful. The students need to feel safe in their classroom and the classroom needs to provide a good environment for learning. All classrooms should also run on routine. Routine helps the teacher focus on teaching students instead of worrying about classroom management issues daily. These two steps will help the students learn but how does the teacher continue to learn and teach each student to their full potential?
Promoting college dialogue refers to the process of effectively and frequently discussing research-based instructional strategies and expected student outcomes. (Whitfield & Moore, 2007) Teachers should communicate regularly about assessments, strategy’s used, and results to better analyze what the best ways are to teach each student. The article states that when you are in a discussion about education with your colleges you should use your interpersonal skills to focus on an honest and open discussion about teaching. Use active listening skills to show interest in another person’s opinion and ask questions to engage listeners.
