ABTRACT
For learners of a second language, the communicative competence is of significant importance. The communicative competence is not only the understanding of the language with grammar, lexicology, syntax or phonetics but also the appropriate usage of language with respect to various social and cultural contexts. Hence, this graduation paper, with the title: “A study on language and culture: inviting act in English and Vietnamese”, is aimed to investigate how spoken invitations are expressed in English and Vietnamese. Specifically, this research focuses on the choice of politeness strategies to realize spoken invitations in the lights of the theories of speech act and politeness and the cross-cultural differences in inviting in English and Vietnamese. The findings suggest that greater emphasis should be laid on socio-cultural factors affecting the linguistic realization of invitations and the rule for the appropriate choice of invitations in English and Vietnamese so as to avoid negative language transfer or cross-cultural interference in making invitations in interaction. This can be done by teaching the cross-cultural communication subject at the university, creating chances for students to communicate with the native speakers and encouraging students to create the English speaking environment.
