...has infected more than 40 million people worldwide as of the end of 2003. More than 1.1 million people in the United States have been infected with HIV. The scourge of HIV has been particularly devastating in Sub-Saharan Africa. The proportion of adult women among those infected with HIV is increasing. In the Mississippi delta, there are over 4,058 people with HIV/AIDS but only 1,833 people receiving treatments. Overall, in the state of Mississippi there are over 8,540 people living with HIV that are not receiving HIV care. Although services are available, the stigma attached to this disease causes many infected not to access medical care. Most people with HIV are between the ages of 25 & 49. HIV may live in the human body for years and can spread to other people ever before symptoms appear. HIV attacks the body defenses so that a person maybe susceptible to diseases most healthy people can resist. In this paper, I will discuss that following: Define HIV/AIDS, transmissions, stigma behind HIV/AIDS, HIV vaccines, and HIV prevention.
Introduction
In the Mississippi delta, there are over 4,058 people living with HIV/AIDS. However, out of the 4,058 living with the disease, only 1,833 people are reported to receive treatment. In the delta, the attitudes about HIV/AIDS bring denial and ignorance about the disease. When a person has HIV/AIDS, they experience stigma, denial, fear and discrimination. HIV/AIDS stigma refers to prejudice, discounting, discrediting and discrimination directed at the people perceived to have AIDS/HIV (Bunn, et al 2007). It has been known that many untreated people who have the disease fail to seek out the services that they need because of the risk of being stigmatized.
