Define the following terms:
1. Environmental Indicator: A quantitative or qualitative measure of the pressures on, or the state of, the biological or physical environment; e.g. Ecological Footprint, Environmental Space.
2. Air pollution: The introduction into the environment (air) of substances, or energy, liable to cause harm to living resources and ecosystem, damage to structure or amenity, or interfere with legitimate uses of the environment.
3. Hypothermia: A condition where the human core body temperature drops below 35° C.
4. Thermal comfort: A subjective measure of being 'warm enough' which is dependent on a number of factors, such as air temperature, air speed, humidity and personal activity.
5. Urban driving cycle: repetitive cycle of acceleration, constant speed driving and braking used to assess the fuel consumption of vehicles in practical use.
Part 2: Short Answer
A. Briefly explain the difference between waste recovery and waste disposal, with reference to the waste management hierarchy.
The different waste management options are considered as hierarchy. The first priority is waste reduction or minimization as far as is economically sustainable. Particular priority is given to the hazardous components of waste. After reduction comes the re-use of objects so that they do not enter the waste stream. The third level of the hierarchy is a broad one which includes materials recycling, composting and recovery of energy from waste. Waste disposal comes at the bottom of the hierarchy and includes final disposal to landfill and incineration of waste where no recovery of energy takes place.
