...are: Santiago – the old man and the fisherman, Manolin – the boy that cannot go on the journey with the old man and is afraid that he might die because of his bad luck, some other characters may be: the sea, and the fish. The sea might also be a main character because without it the fish caught by Santiago would never live. And the fish might be one of the characters too because, without him there would be no story. The plot rotates all around, mainly Santiago and the fish. The sea may also be considered as an antagonist of the old man, because the sea brings him the fish but even the sharks that attack him. In this story the position and the importance of a character can be decided basing on the rider’s point of view. The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an old fisherman and a marlin, the biggest fish he says to have ever caught. Santiago has sailed 84 days without catching any fishes because of his bad luck. Santiago also has a young apprentice called Manolin; the bad luck of Santiago is what makes Manolin’s parents order to the boy to stop fishing with Santiago but to start fishing with better fishermen. However, Manolin, is still very attached to the old man, and every night goes to see him in his shack feeding him, taking care of him and speaking about Joe DiMaggio: Santiago’s favorite baseball player. One night though, Santiago tells Manolin that the next day he would go to fish in the gulf and that he would have stayed away some time.
So on the eighty-fifth day Santiago sails alone. On the first day, a fish immediately catches his bait; Santiago is sure the fish is a marlin and is determined to take him home, but Santiago is too weak to pull the fish on his boat and the fish starts pulling the boat around.
