...before indulging in health conscious comestibles is almost the trendy thing to do nowadays and if you take the time to step back and look, you’ll see it, go on a peregrination of your favorite fast food restaurants and the message is ubiquitous-healthy is “in”. However eating healthy is only part of the equation on the path to a healthy lifestyle but it is an important first step in the right direction. Maintaining healthy diet will have positive effects on health and increase longevity.
The word “diet” is almost synonymous with losing weight, however; a diet is simply a particular selection of food which can be modified or prescribed to improve a person’s physical condition, treat an illness or disease. In the quest to shed unwanted pounds, it is not uncommon for many to fall victim to the supernumerary “fad diets” which are spread across the web and litter the healthy living section of the local bookstore, their modus operandi being a quick fix solution. Fad diets however are hardly commensurate with healthful eating and lifestyle because they are usually deprivation based (Campbell, 2006)and commonly omit whole food groups which may foment behaviors detrimental to general health of the body. And so why do these fad diets thrive in our modern “diet culture”? Because they do deliver a quick solution to weight loss, however; this too is usually folly masquerading as truth and loss of water weight is mistaken for actual body fat (R.D., 2007). The truth is, although fad diets’ quick fixes may do wonders for self-esteem, rarely are there maintenance programs in place to keep the weight off and given the asperity of their effectiveness, the unwanted weight comes right back as soon as we succumb to our gustatory vices.
