Health care costs are increasing faster then wages and millions of Americans are uninsured, while millions more are under insured. But our health care system spending is not buying us superior health, better health care, or more resources. Instead, our health care systems is pushing millions of hardworking Americans into relentless financial constraints. Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain each have plans to reform health care in order to provide Americans affordable health care that emphasizes prevention, while controlling costs and maintaining individuals' choice of doctors and plans.
The Baltimore Sun states Obama's health care plan as creating an agency to regulate the private insurance market. Consumers could choose to buy private insurance through the agency or the federal government. It would require providers to sell coverage to those who are already sick. Also requires large businesses to provide employees with insurance or contribute to the cost. The agency would finally provide subsidies for lower-income patients and mandate coverage for children. The Obama plan would lower health care costs by $2,500 for a typical family by investing in health information technology, prevention, and coordination. The plan will require coverage of preventive services including cancer screenings, and will increase state and local preparedness for terrorist attacks and natural disasters. Obama's plan will invest $10 million a year over the next five years to move the U.S. health care system into the full electronics world. He assumes that it will be paid from savings in the system and from discontinuing the Bush tax cuts for those making more then $250,000 per year.
