Global Warming
...man made problem and say that there is a significant possibility that human actions are heating the Earth at a hazardous speed and with consequences that could take years to reverse.
Studies that scientists have conducted suggest that there is a connection between man made greenhouse gasses and a dramatic heating of the oceans on Earth. Researchers, most financed by the US government, have seen what they depict as a surprising link between a rise in the temperature of the ocean and the pollution of the environment over the past 40 years. The study tears down a main dispute of global warming disbelievers within the US government- that changes in the climate could be a natural occurrence. The findings are important because most of the proof of a warmer planet has been from air temperatures but the oceans are the major force behind the Earth’s climate. Tim Barnett, a marine physicist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego and a chief member of the team said, “Over the past 40 years there has been considerable warming of the planetary system and approximately 90 percent of that warming has gone directly into the oceans” (qtd. In Connor 1).
America emits a quarter of the planets greenhouse gasses; however it is one of the few civilized nations not to have signed the Kyoto treaty to control emissions. The President’s advisors have argued that the science of global warming is full of doubts and change could be an ordinary phenomenon. Dr. Barnett said that position was unsound because it was now apparent from the recent study, which is still to be published, that man-made greenhouse gases had triggered large amounts of heat to be absorbed by the oceans.
The results of global warming are many and diverse. It is usually hard to ascribe particular natural occurrences to long-term reasons but some consequences of current climate change could already be...
