...majority of our activities have resulted in the depletion of our world’s natural resources. We have exploited our planet adversely through our race to advance in most areas of our lives. These economically, culturally, and agricultural changes once made up an agrarian society have now been disproportionately turned into an urbanized realm.
Urbanization affects the world two-fold, economically and ecologically. This may be for the better, in the eyes of many, but to others it can hit home severely. The U.S. and many other consumptive countries have the largest ecological footprints. I argue that many underdeveloped countries with the aid of other countries may eventually emulate what they consider successful.
Economic changes are of significance to the social group Movimentos dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra. In Brazil, Landless Workers Movement is the largest social movement in Latin America with an estimated 1.5 million landless members. In Sao Paulo, 186 million live below the nations poverty line in urban slums. The MST seizes land they see as being unproductive land and distribute it to the poor that have never owned land. MST relies on the Brazilian Constitution that says all land must be productive.
Only 4% percent of the Brazilian farmland actually belongs to the population. With urbanization having a greater degree of empowerment, one family owns 17,000 acres of land, and regards the MST as a dangerous Marxist organization bent on stealing land. The MST’s success lies in its ability to organize and educate its members and poor people. Those included in land occupations were a refugee couple from a Sao Paulo slum that were both HIV positive, held down with many unfortunate circumstances. In order for them to acquire opportunity, they directed their confidence to the MST.
