The public is accepting the rights of individual lesbians and gay men, but they are hesitant to recognize and accept lesbian and gay families. Many people believe that a traditional nuclear family, marriage, heterosexuality, and biological parenthood are what is vest and what is “normal.”
In the past homosexuals usually hid their sexual orientation, but they have always adopted. Today, homosexuals are being more accepted as potential adoptive parents, just as they are seen in other aspects of the U.S. society. The increase in numbers of gay and lesbian biological parents in the U.S has been aided by this recent change. Then the inevitable question arises: should gay and lesbian couples be permitted to adopt? There are many arguments to support and appose whether gay and lesbian couples should be permitted to adopt. In supporting gay and lesbian adoption there are three main arguments. First, being homosexual does not mean that they will be bad or good parents. Second, if one passes the screening processes for eligibility to become a parent of an adopted child that’s all that should matter. Third, homosexuals should be treated the same as heterosexuals, and statistics behind acceptance of homosexuals. In an opposing view there are six arguments that tells why gay, lesbian, and bisexual couples should not adopt children. There are many arguments that oppose lesbian and gay men having a child including the Bible saying that gay and lesbian parenting is a sin, lesbian and gay parenting being unnatural, lesbian and gay parents being selfish by ignoring the best interest of the child, children of lesbian and gay parents lack appropriate gender role models, children of lesbian and gay parents grow up gay and are confused about their sexual orientation,...
