...talk about the importance of behaviour and emotions in the process of decision making. The first part of it will cover the theoretical part of rationality, the rational choice theory and behavioural economic. In the second part, I will give an introduction to the study case of Mexican guerrilla EZLN. Finally, I will explain through some of the behavioural economic models and theories why the people in the region of Chiapas helped the armed nucleus and why did the Mexican government failed to act pre-emptively against it.
Rationality has been used to describe many religious and philosophical theories which hold on truth, reason and knowledge. The use of reason is a key method to achieve certain knowledge. It is based on the logic of its arguments, this is said to be logically valid. It is also said to use a broader set of means than just logic, like probability, personal experience, etc. in order to prove if relations between premises are truth and/or to confirm hypothesis.
In political, economic and social sciences a decision is qualified as rational if at the moment of pursuing its goals, an individual or an organization chooses the most optimal way, for example, when allocating resources or at the moment of maximizing an expected performance with a given information currently known. It is commonly stated that when acting rational an individual follows a self-interested manner (Wikipedia, 2006).
The rational choice theory explains the selection of alternatives or courses of action that would be the best possible. According to Graham Allison, the core concepts of the rational action models are:
1. Interests and values are translated into payoffs, utilities or preferences functions which represent the alternative set of consequences of the possible actions taken.
