Eu´s Policy Against The Proliferation Of Wmd
...The proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and missiles to make use of these
weapons has become one of the most serious threats concerning international peace and security. In
addition, there has been increasing attacks by terroristic groups towards western states, especially
from terrorists who have their origins in the Middle East and who have an islamic religion.
Presently, one of the aim of all of these terroistic groups is to kill as much people as possible by one
attack. Even though WMD are not easy to employ in a war and no current evidence exists that a
state or a terroristic group will make use of them, discussions about more effective procedures to
prevent the proliferation are widely present. The prevention of the proliferation of WMD is
nowadays also one serious issue the European Union (EU) and its member states have to deal with.
For the first time the EU starts to formulate a common approach to cope with this threats. The
occasion on 9/11 in the year 2001 and the war in Iraq highlights the necessity for a more serious
attitude towards non-proliferation and disarmament issues. Above all the terrorist atacks in the UK
and Spain in the last decade emphasized the new challenges concerning non-state actors and the
need to avert that WMD pass into the hands of terrorists.
Weapons of mass destruction
WMD are divided into three different kinds: biological, chemical and nuclear weapons.
Biological and chemical weapons are relatively easy to construct and cheap in building but still
they can kill thousands of people. These weapons are more likely to be used by poor countries
