The Effects Of Media On The Perception Of Violence And Involvement In Deviant Activities

Background:
The difference between modern day culture and the past is quickly widening due to the present dancehall and pop culture. Many of the cultural values and experience passed down from generation to generation are quickly being eroded and erased. Though there are no official statistics, many researchers and journalists have posited views stating that the generation of today is becoming overly materialistic and has lost sight of realistic goals and values such as ambition and hard work. This can be seen, to some extent, in Jamaica as many teens do not take school seriously and have very little or no ambition or aspirations. So it is quite clear that the priorities and values of today’s society, especially our teens are being greatly influenced by the messages sent through dancehall and pop culture. The once genuinely hospitable and courteous society is now filled with violence and lewdness. The long-term effects of this continuing trend and prevalence are a society which values will continue to deteriorate. Therefore a study of whether or not the messages sent through these cultures are affecting the teens negatively will be done.

Purpose of the Research
The purpose of this research is to satisfy the requirement for CAPE Caribbean Studies IA. I also wish to understand the changes in the core cultural values of our teenagers and to pinpoint whether dancehall and pop cultures have caused these changes.
Educational Value of the Research
