Abstract

This paper discusses dreams and their interpretations. “Dreams are a communication of body, mind and spirit in a symbolic, communicative, environmental state of being.” (www.sleeps.com) Dreams can often times provide insight into our life’s great events. The interpretation of our dreams involves the finding of symbols and their meanings. Being able to interpret dreams gives us a better understanding of ourselves.
Dreams and their Interpretation

What is a dream? It’s very hard to explain what a dream is. Many people think of dreams as movies or pictures that play in their heads. Often times, dreams aren’t even remembered. To the normal person dreams are just something that happens when we sleep, but to professionals dreams can reveal much more about ourselves than we would sometimes like to admit. “Every night you tell yourself stories. Tales of adventure and love, narratives of strife and woe arise in your sleeping mind. This nocturnal collection of fables is richly illustrated, presenting your dearest hopes and your worst fears in bright pictures. We call these sleep stories “dreams.”’ (Garfield, XIII)

To begin the interpretation process, it is important to know how and when dreams take place. Dreams take place during the R.E.M. stage of sleep. The R.E.M. stage is one that takes place usually when we are at our deepest point of sleep. “The dreams we are likely to remember occur during periods of rapid -eye- movement (REM) sleep, which we have several times each night.” (Scheingold, 2008) It is because we are at our deepest point of sleep, during the R.E.M. stage, that we are often unable to remember our dreams.
