While this number is astonishing, it is more surprising that the abuser is someone they know; the offender is an intimate partner of the victim. More women are killed every year by their husbands or boyfriends than by the hands of a stranger. As you continue to read, you will learn of the social and psychological effects, perspectives from a victim, ways women are trying to help themselves and young woman and organizational help for preventive alternatives. Not only can women strive to become more educated about this issue, but they can prevent it for the future generations of men and women by learning of preventive alternatives.
As the statistical rate of domestic violence is alarmingly high, the number of battered women can never be accurate. Data gathered are mainly based on incidents reported to law enforcements and medical facilities. There are numerous young and older women that have found only courage to inform a friends, family members, coworker, nurse, or physician which is not always recorded under law enforcement. As a result of this fear, many women have suffered social effects over the years. Socially, women endure lack of confidence and fear of judgment. Victims often steer away from interaction with others, either intimately or otherwise, for the fear of developing the same sort of violent relationship. There is a panic that someone could possibly learn of the violence and intervene. While the intervention might seem like a solution to the problem, the victim is often afraid that the abuser could find out and the situation could get worse. Resultantly, the victim keeps to herself with the idea that her position could get worse.
