Primary prevention is devoted to a variety of health and social issues, including violence, high medical costs, chronic illnesses, and health disparities amongst the underprivileged. The basis of prevention is a comprehensive strategy addressing far-reaching complicated social, health and economic issues of society as a whole. Primary prevention focuses on stopping an illness or problem from happening rather than addressing it afterwards. It highlights universal changes that deal with entire communities, rather than concentrating on one individual at a time (Prevention, n.d.).
An environmental approach is the key to the success of the evolvement of preventative healthcare, with primary prevention being the first line of defense. In this application, the term environment refers to anything outside an individual which is shared by a group of people. Multiple environmental issues influence health, safety, and well-being. These include air and water quality, housing conditions, education, and access to health and social services. Contaminated air or water contributes to the health crisis by increasing the incidence of infection. Crowded housing conditions compound the problem, because people living in close quarters often pass infections to one another. Poor educational resources and limited access to healthcare and social services causes the problem to continue in a cyclical fashion. Therefore, the environment can make it challenging for an individual to be healthy if the environment itself is unhealthy (Prevention, n.d.).
