In my understanding nation is something general where there are no individuals. Moreover every person sees the world from own point of view, but people are social beings and it is really hard to stay alone with your opinion. Consequently person feels protected and confident when he is a part of something bigger. Of course there are many other occasions to keep together such as relative relations, friendly relations, material relations, or any other advantages. It can be noticed that usually there are more than one reason to stay together, but I think that the firmest cause is an idea of self-esteem. Actually I think that this idea does not lead to knowing of others’ imperfection, this idea implies that you are better.
Also people are self-interested beings, therefore they are interested to relate or have something better. There is a saying “Tell me who are your friends and I will say who you are”. So if you are good as a person and you are wealthy, but all your surroundings are unreliable and bad as persons, probably you will be accepted similar as your surroundings. In my opinion, there are two alternatives either you change your surroundings or you try to believe that they are better than they are. Because strong believe as itself is very influential. So if you are a part of society, which you love and believe in, some psychological thing will work. I mean you will work for this society meanwhile it will work for you by giving you a sense of protection and solidarity.
