Crises Intervention Paper
...He is currently serving in the
United States Army and has just returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq. Client states
that since his return he has had problems with sleeping, is irritable, anxious, and has violent
bursts of anger. Client is married with two very young children ages 2 years old and three
months. Client lives in New York but wife is currently living in California with her parents
due to his erratic behavior and unforeseen bouts of rage. Clients wife feels that neither she
nor her children are safe around client until he gets help for himself. Client has refused help
until this point because he has felt that he is less of a man if he admits that something is wrong
and that he needs help.
I would use a client-centered therapy as a counselor for this particular client because this kind of
therapy assumes that human beings are good and rational people who are capable of assuming
responsibility for themselves and making the choices that can lead to independence and self-
actualization.
I do recognize that this client’s negative emotions such as hate and anger exist, but that they exist
mainly as responses to frustrated basic human needs of love, security and a feeling of
belonging. I believe that this is exactly why this client is acting out in anger. I think that it is
only natural that he feels this way after experiencing the horrible effects of being in combat.
Especially after serving two tours in Iraq, serving in the front lines, being separated from his
family and friends, and missing the birth of one of his sons I would think that he would most
definitely feel the need for love and security. I think that he feels a sense of belonging in the
army but I do not feel that he has a sense of belonging in his family life. I think that the client
