The initial research for this for this paper was carried out using a specific questionnaire which included questions regarding children’s first experiences with school therefore covering the ages of 5-6. The questions related to the perception the children had on their first days of school and period just beyond where the child receives its first school experiences and how the parents dealt with certain aspects of the child’s learning process.
The subjects chosen for the questionnaire and subsequently the research and analysis were three Danish families who are settled in Geneva and have one or two children over the age of 7 to allow for the parents to already have the answers to the questions that will be asked. Danish families were chosen because first I am Danish myself and I was able to use my own parents friends for the research as they are also based here in Switzerland, but also partly because I wanted to be able to compare whether or not there were any direct differences between the answers to the questions, if the children were initially placed into the Danish school system or an international school system.
I have chosen to look at the answers using Erikson’s and Piaget’s theories to see
whether the children fit into the development categories of their age and whether they have had what is considered normal development through their initial school experiences. When looking at Eriksons stages of development, the children in the age group chosen should be either in the late Initiative vs guilt stage or entering into the Industry vs inferiority stage of development, and therefore their reactions
to different aspects of life and changes that are coming during the first school years should fit in mostly to the criteria of these stages, the ladder one more then the first one of course.
