Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
...CPR is a life saving procedure that combines rescue breathing, which provides oxygen to the lungs, and chest compressions, which stimulates the heart to resume beating. It is important to follow a set of procedures in order to maintain calm during the crisis and keep the victim alive until medical professionals arrive.
First, make sure the scene is safe and then have someone else call 911. Do not perform CPR if the victim is breathing. According to firstaid.com, the important first steps before performing CPR are the ABC’s: Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. Open the victim’s airway by lifting the chin carefully and tilt the head backwards. Check for breathing. Check the victims chest, listen for breathing sounds or put your ear near their mouth to see if you can feel their breath.
Then, check for circulation. Put two fingers gently on the victim’s neck between the Adam’s apple and their muscle. If the victim is still not breathing keep the airway open and pinch the victim’s nose shut, hard enough so that no air would escape. Seal your mouth with theirs and take two long breaths slowly.
Find the lowest tip of the victim’s breast bone and press the heal of your hand there. Place your other hand on top of your first hand and enter lace your fingers. Sit up, lean over the victim so that your shoulders are directly above your hands. Push down on the victim’s chest fifteen times in ten seconds. Stop and give two slow breaths. Repeat four times. If the victim is still not breathing, repeat the process over again.
I hope none of you will have to perform CPR, but if you do, now you’ll know how to go out there and do it.
